Our Story

“Farming isn’t a battle against nature, but a partnership with it. It is respecting the basics of nature in action and ensuring that they continue.” – Jeff Koehler

Our Founder - Dr Rokiah Hassan

Years ago, while Dr. Rokiah was leading a property development company, she couldn’t help but realize that ever larger tracts of land were being subjected to rapid urbanization. It struck her that:

We Consume

Despite the fact that Malaysia still produces many goods from agriculture, the country is relying ever more heavily on imports for the food we consume.

Gardening

Despite our agrarian roots, Malaysians are losing touch with the land. Our farming traditions have not translated into activities that cultivated from the land, such as gardening.

Industrial Farming

Additionally, industrial farming practices have supplanted the old sustainable farming methods.

She began to feel greatly dissatisfied with what she was doing, and that she was a part of this non-sustainable problem. The dissonance she felt between her corporate work and her passion for nature and the environment began to weigh heavily on her mind.

Armed with this realization, she gained her Ph.D. in Environmental Science in 2014, and decided never to look back, desiring to be an agent for change instead. Dr Rokiah started research activities towards organic farming in 2002 under Heritage Biotech (M) Sdn Bhd. In 2015 the company changed its name to Heritage Environment Sdn Bhd (re-incorporated on 12th May 2015). Since its establishment, the company has been engaged in the research, development and commercialization of bio pesticides, bio fertilizers, and waste management & treatment systems. The company’s products under the BioSense brand are designed to be commercially viable biotech products and services with high market potential, aimed at the fields of agriculture, horticulture and environmental conservation.

Dr Rokiah is a passionate advocate for educating the younger generation about the need for and benefits of sustainable gardening and farming. She hosts many activities to this end, and shares her love for these issues at the Smart Heritage portal. Dr. Rokiah spends her free time gardening. She loves to go hiking and travelling, appreciating the natural wonders found worldwide

Our Initiatives

#zerowaste #growyourownfood

Currently, one of the primary initiatives which received great response is Zero Waste. The initiative is part of Sustainable Development Goal no 12 (Responsible Consumption) and 13 (Climate Action). Rokiah has developed a specific module to offer to every category of people from K-12 , University Students and public community to get involve in conserving the environment continuously. Another innovative technology she has developed is BIOCATALYST, to help to break down the food waste effectively and efficiently. The end products can be used immediately for your organic gardening. It helps you eat more fresh and healthy food such as fruits and vegetables that ripen in the garden have more nutrients than store-bought vegetables that must be picked early. By growing your own food, you are the one to decide what goes on your plants and your soil, allowing you to reduce amount of harmful chemicals polluting our environment and waterways This complete the tool Our Initiatives #zerowaste #growyourownfood of circular economy, from waste to food security. These are all the benefits she wants to offer to public at large!

Our Successes

Our successes in promoting sustainable waste management to produce natural organic fertilizers via large scale composting has seen us being consulted by a number of large commercial property developers, keen to incorporate waste reduction and environmentally sustainable methods of recycling food waste.
